POPScholar, Inc is a nonprofit orginization dedicated to supporting and empowering students, particularly those who have faced significant hardships throughout their K-12 education. Here at POPScholar Inc., we believe that if a student Perseveres through their hardships, that will manifest Opportunities that they must take advantage of to fulfill their Purpose in life, #MakeItPOP.
We are proposing the establishment of the POPScholar Award. This scholarship aims to recognize and assist high school seniors who have overcome adversity and are committed to pursuing higher education in the field of teaching.
POPScholar Inc. uses relationship development to help high school students that have experienced homelessness to find purpose and wellness.
Students that have experienced homelessness throughout their time in k-12 education have persevered through obstacles that often make it challenging for them to succeed academically. However, there are outstanding students that have persevered through those challenges with the support of federal programs like McKinney-Vento that allows these students to remain at their
current school if they experience homelessness. In addition to federal programs like McKinney-Vento, these students have been inspired and motivated by particular teachers throughout their k-12 education to continue their education and go on to college despite their hardships. Hence, the goals of the POPScholar Awards are to:
● Honor and reward high school seniors that have experienced homelessness throughout their time in k-12 education that intends to pursue a career in teaching.
● Focus public attention on good news and results of students supported by the McKinney-Vento Program.
● Focus public attention on the impact of great teachers and their influence on students to pursue careers in teaching.
● Spotlighting how persevering through obstacles can pay off.
● Encouraging high school seniors to pursue a field in teaching
● Create a pipeline of aspiring seniors pursuing the teaching profession from high school, to college, to a career in teaching
● Encourage corporate and foundation partners in assisting POPScholar, Inc. in rewarding high school seniors that have experienced homelessness to pursue a career in teaching.
The primary objectives of the POPScholar Award are as follows:
1. To provide financial support: The scholarship will award $1000 to selected McKinney-Vento students, helping to alleviate the financial burden associated with college education.
2. To promote higher education: By targeting high school seniors who have faced hardships, we aim to encourage them to pursue higher education and empower them to positively impacttheir communities through education.
3. To foster collaboration: POPScholar will collaborate with school stakeholders within the school division to identify deserving McKinney-Vento students who meet the scholarship criteria.
4. To create a memorable experience: The scholarship recipients will be surprised with the award during a school day in front of their peers, recognizing their achievements and providing them with a special moment of celebration.
5. Keep the fight going: We hope that the scholarship recipient will embrace this moment and use it as fuel to keep going. We want our POPScholars to know that “someone is always watching”. Regardless of your circumstances, we want our POPScholars to continue to persevere and to know that if they continue to Make It “POP”, they will be successful in life.
6. Building a Teacher Pipeline: Higher learning institutions are not producing the amount of teachers that did in the past for various reasons. For every POPScholar awarded with $1,000, TheTeachers of Promise Institute will receive an additional $500 to sponsor students that are graduating college headed towards their first year of teaching. The Teachers of Promise Institute was established by Wade Whitehead in 2004 to identify and recognize the best prospective teachers from college and university schools of education across Virginia.
